“A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.” Proverbs 1:5
Why develop a habit of reading? Why read the Bible and great books? Reading stimulates our imagination and expands our understanding of the world we live in. Trisha and I have always read to our children great books, both classics, and history. I have read George McDonald’s, The Princess And The Goblins, to the delight of my children and grandchildren many times.
CS Lewis held academic positions in English literature at both Oxford University and Cambridge and is one of the great minds of the last century. He also wrote children stories. I have read Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, at least three times to our children. To capture the hearts and minds of children when telling stories, you will have to do better than the internet and television. Remember, it’s competition out there.
Read great stories and the Bible with expression and emotion and your children, students and audience will develop a love of storytelling. When you read aloud, put your heart into the story. CS Lewis said, “Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” I am halfway through Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia for my own enjoyment. I’m glad I never stopped.
Reading will expand your vocabulary and increase your communication skills, which are essentials to engage in life to the fullest. “The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge…” Proverbs 15:14
